The Higo Kinkō Tradition

Tea taste in iron and gold. Under the patronage of Hosokawa Sansai — warlord, tea master, student of Rikyū — the fitting makers of Higo raised restraint to a style: Hirata Hikozō’s quiet inlay, Hayashi Matashichi’s iron sukashi cut as finely as lacquer, and the houses that followed them in Kumamoto for two and a half centuries. Higo fittings are the koshirae aesthetic the samurai tea world prized above all others.
