The Yamato Shikkake School

In the shadow of Nara's great temples, where warrior-monks drilled, the Shikkake school forged more naginata than any other Yamato line. Norinaga — who dated his own tantō at forty-eight in 1319 — is its de facto founder, and his name passed down the generations into the Muromachi. Shikkake speaks the Yamato vocabulary of high shinogi, flowing itame toward masame, and thick ji-nie, but its signature is the temper: a suguha base broken by small gunome run together in a gentle, connected undulation (ko-gunome-tsure) — the trait that sets it apart from its close cousin Taima. Hotsure, nijūba, and a flame-like hakikake bōshi complete the hand.
