The Yamato Monju School

The Tegai name carried into the new age. The Monju smiths descend from Yamato’s great Tegai school, their name taken from the Monju bodhisattva of Kanenaga’s tradition; in the Keichō era Nanki Shigekuni — retainer-smith to the Kishū Tokugawa — refounded the line, fusing Yamato masame with Sōshū breadth and fire. Three generations of Shigekuni carried it deep into the Edo period.
