The Musashi Hankei School

The gunsmith who became a swordsmith. Noda Hankei bored matchlock barrels for Ieyasu before turning, after 1616, to blades — and brought a metallurgist’s obsession with steel: dark, watery hijiki-hada like no other smith’s, dense with masame and curling chikei, the manner of Norishige reborn in Edo. One name; thirty-five Jūyō.
